OVER 150 YEARS OF GENEROSITY, SERVICE AND COMPASSION IN NEW ZEALAND
The Society of St Vincent de Paul is an international Catholic lay organization inspired by the Gospels of Jesus Christ.
Vincentians work to promote human dignity and justice through personal contact with those in need. The aim of the Society is to provide a means whereby members can practice Christianity by caring for their neighbours in the persons of the needy.
Members express this philosophy by giving of themselves, their concern, their friendship, their time and talents towards helping people regardless of origin, cultural background or religious beliefs. Various works undertaken are regular visitations to hospital patients, to the elderly, sick and lonely in their homes providing material and financial assistance. Other works include, rehabilitation of prisoners and their families, the resettlement of refugees and migrant families, school lunches for children and special works such as the mobile food vans. The Society works alongside other organisations, religious and secular to achieve its aims and it is ecumenical.
The Society relies on the financial support from its members, benefactors and charitable trusts to undertake these works and to assist in the development of new programmes to further help those in need.
Founded in Paris in 1833 by Frederic Ozanam, the Society operates in 143 countries and has 800,000 members serving 15 million friends in need.
